Why We Only Talk About the Back Wall

Nhatoi-nyc is a kitchen remodeling contractor in Palm Springs, and most of what we build sits on one line in the floor plan: the wall between the kitchen and the backyard. We open it with pass-through windows and sliding or pocketing doors, rework the kitchen so it serves that opening, and build the prep counter and grill on the patio side.

We ended up here because it is the kitchen problem this town actually has. Palm Springs houses were designed for outdoor living, and plenty of them already have clerestory windows, glass walls in the living room and a pool a few steps away. Then you look at the kitchen and it faces a blank wall or a side yard, and every meal outside means carrying everything through the house.

How We Work

We look at the wall from inside, from outside and from the attic before we talk about a price. An exterior opening involves framing, sometimes a beam, and often wiring or plumbing that has to be moved. On post-and-beam homes the roof loads land on specific posts, so an engineer details the header or beam and the City of Palm Springs reviews the plans before anything is cut.

Outside, we use materials meant for the desert. Outdoor rated appliances, stainless or polymer cabinet boxes, counters that tolerate direct sun, and fixtures that can live with very hard valley water. Exterior work is scheduled for the early part of the day through the summer, and concrete, stucco and tile work is planned around the heat rather than rushed through it.

What We Will Tell You Up Front

Not every kitchen needs a slider. A well placed pass-through window and a good outdoor counter can do most of what people want for a fraction of the cost, and if that is the case in your house we will say so. We also tell people when their existing cabinets are sound enough to keep, and when the wall they want to open carries more than it looks like it does.
